Are the daily merchant services calls to my business a scam or just processor sales?

My staff gets calls almost every day from people saying they are calling about balances or merchant services on our credit card account. They ask for whoever handles merchant services and try to keep whoever answers on the phone. We do process cards, so it sounds almost relevant, but it also feels scripted and suspicious. Are they trying to scam us, sell processing, or get information?

It may be a sales call rather than a classic scam, but you should still treat it as untrusted. Many processor sales teams and lead generators use vague merchant-services language to reach the owner or accounting person. The risk is that staff may disclose processor details, statements, volumes, owner names, or banking information. Give staff a script: do not confirm account details, do not transfer based on vague claims, ask for company name and callback number, and route all processor or funding calls to one owner-approved channel. If they create urgency or ask for sensitive information, end the call.
